Sailing stones, sliding rocks, and moving rocks all refer to a geological phenomenon where rocks move in long tracks along a smooth valley floor without human or animal intervention. They have been recorded and studied in a number of places around Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, where the number and length of travel grooves are notable. The force behind their movement is not understood and is the subject of research.

up-schist-creek:

It’s a bird.

True story: During my lunchbreak today, as I was walking down the road, a bird flew overhead and I swear it was singing the first line to Nellie the Elephant. When I heard it, I sang the next line (“and said goodbye to the circus…”) quietly to myself and then ended up with the song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Antarctica is roughly the size of the United States and Mexico combined.

Initial thoughts:
Antarctica is bigger than I thought.
Is it just me, or does this mean that Mexico is also a lot bigger than I thought. You could fit two Mexicos in the free space there, right?
Those Antarctic explorers in the early 20th Century were awesome.
I’ve always liked that sticky-out bit of Antarctica. It’s like the continent’s winking at us.

Chill your beans

Someone at work said this to me today, when I was in the middle of another rant. It means ‘calm down’ or something similar.

Although the link proves that other people know about this phrase, I’d never heard it before.

I really like it and fully intend to start using it.

Today was the nicest day of the year so far.
This photo was taken at 7.36am this morning, with my phone, through the window of a bus travelling at 50mph. Imagine what it looked like in real life.
