As ever with Turner, great tunes come first, as exampled in the gloriously massive mosh-along rock song ‘One Foot Before The Other’, singles ‘Peggy Sang The Blues’ and ‘I Still Believe’, and the unshakably memorable ‘I Am Disappeared’. Closing with the smart anti-hymn ‘Glory Hallelujah’, ‘England Keep My Bones’ never falters. The soundtrack to this summer? Screw that — these songs will be soundtracking many of our lives for years to come.

Rock Sound magazine’s 9/10 review of Frank Turner’s new album England Keep My Bones.

No argument here.

Do Monkeys Wonder? - BBC Nature

“When we visit a zoo and look into a monkey’s eyes, wondering what it is thinking, it might even be looking at us right back, wondering exactly the same.”

New Theme!

For the first time in nearly three years, I’ve updated my blog’s theme. I switched from a slightly-modified version of Bill Israel’s Nostalgia to Matthew Buchanan’s Solaris. Isn’t she pretty?

I’ve messed around with the Solaris theme slightly, and will probably continue to do so, but it’s such a nice design there isn’t much that I want to change. I haven’t got the Disqus comments cracked yet but I’ll work on that.

There’s a bit of guilt involved, because I’ve always used Bill Israel’s themes in the past. I still like Nostalgia’s simplicity, and will miss it, but sometimes you just have to move on.

So thank you, Bill Israel, for the great themes in the past, and thank you, Matthew Buchanan, for the great theme of the present.

One day, I promise I’ll design my own.

Fire in Babylon Official Trailer (by RevolverEntertainmnt)

For Father’s Day, I got my dad the DVD of Fire in Babylon, which is a documentary about the rise of the West Indies cricket team in the 1970s, and their total domination of international cricket until the early 1990s.

It’s a brilliant, uplifiting documentary which is about more than the sport — it also involves racism, apartheid, the players’ individual stories and the rise of Caribbean culture and pride around the world during the same period. There’s a scene in it where the legendary Viv Richards talks about the time he found out that Nelson Mandela, while imprisoned, knew who he was. It’s a great moment.

Also, despite not having played cricket since school, and having no real interest in it now, it does show how cricket’s ‘boring’ reputation is sometimes undeserved.

The film’s tagline is “They brought the world to its knees, and a nation to its feet.” That’s a pretty good tagline.

There were just a couple of security guards at the building. We didn’t try to get inside - just pressed ourselves up against the glass like zombies do.

One of the things you notice at festivals is the people who walk around the site, collecting empty paper beer cups which they can exchange for cash.

Monolith
Right, that’s cupboards and clothes decluttered today. Tomorrow, it’s books and DVDs.
These shelves are just my ‘to read’ books, and they’re double-stacked.

Ranmoor for Life
Clearing out some stuff this afternoon, I found a mug from Ranmoor House, which was my hall of residence during my first year at Sheffield University.
As I’ve mentioned before, I was in the Annexe building, which everyone knows was the best building.
Ranmoor House was sadly demolished in 2008, but it lives on in our hearts.
