Gratin Dauphinois

Last month, at Download, one of the highlights of the entire weekend was finding this food stall that served French food.  It was known around the festival as “The French Food place”.  It’s official name was La Grande Bouffe and, to people more familiar with music festivals than I am, it’s already well-respected.

They basically served gratin variations and the nicest sausages in the world.  One of the best parts is that they cook their food in these huge pans right in front of you:

Big Frying Pans

I know that you have to take the “this is the first real food that we’ve eaten in four days” factor but, honestly, this was the nicest food that I’ve had for a long, long time.  If it wasn’t for the fact that I knew I had to leave room for more beer, I would have moved my tent outside their stall.

Anyway, last night I started craving it, so today I made it for dinner.  I went shopping after work, bought everything that I needed and 45 minutes ago (9pm), it was ready:

Gratin

Hopefully, it looks close enough to give some of my buddies flashbacks.  I’ll be honest, it wasn’t as nice as the festival food, but it was pretty good and will definitely be made again.

Also, anyone with access to a Marks & Spencer needs to get down there tomorrow and buy a pack of their Aberdeen Angus sausages, because OH MY GOD!

In Flames - Only For The Weak (Live)

I’ve had a mild interest in In Flames for a while, but I saw them play at Download a couple of weeks ago and they were awesome.

The vocalist, Anders, was a cocky twat between songs (slagging off other bands), but show me a good singer who isn’t.

Anyway, since then, I’ve bought a lot of their stuff and I think this song, from their Used And Abused DVD, is my favourite performance of theirs.  It sounds great, it has a good level of audience involvement (“Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!”), and the keyboard melody is so much more prominent than in the album version, which I think makes it sound better.

This has become my new “KEEP GOING!” song while I’m on the bike.

Three photos, two pictures

A couple of nights ago, I was messing around with Canon’s PhotoStitch program, which is sweet.

Tonight, I realised that, with three photos, I could make two completely different pictures.

I was messing around with Canon’s PhotoStitch program tonight after I noticed that a couple of a friend’s photographs, which were taken a few minutes apart, looked like they could be stitched together.
I like the result.  There was a big difference in the brightness/contrast of the two photos, which I matched the best I could, and there was smoke in one of them, so you can easily see the seam, but I like it.

The Wildhearts at Download Festival 2008 (via scardwel).

Remember that video of Josh Homme losing it with a fan that threw something onstage?

Last week at Download, The Wildhearts played and actually invited the crowd to throw things on stage for most of their set.

This is the beginning of their last song, before the organisers cut the power on them because they’d overrun.  But not before Ginger had managed to catch an egg someone threw at him.

This was one of the best sets I saw at Download.  You could tell the band were loving it, the crowd was loving it and there was great interaction between everyone.  I wasn’t the biggest Wildhearts fan before I saw them, but I love them now.

Because dental hygiene is important.  Even at music festivals.
Don’t adjust your screen, there was a problem with the film, but I kind of like how it looks.

I’ll try to make this the last photo from Download that I put up, but this is one of my favourite photos from the weekend.  Heading into the arena on the first day of bands.
Ste was taking the photo, so he’s not in it (I’m starting to regret not getting someone to take a photo of all six of us at some point), but this photo just makes me happy.

In honour of Lostprophets, who:

  • Just headlined the last night of The Download Festival;
  • Despite being an unpopular choice, and knew it, didn’t give a fuck and said as much on stage;
  • Weren’t my favourite band there, but
  • Won my respect;
  • Won a lot of other people’s respect;
  • Exceeded my expectations more than any other band there, and
  • Got the crowd going like no other band I watched;

here is a cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me A River’ that they played live for BBC Radio 1, which has been knocking around for a while.
