The Girl With Colitis Goes By
I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really care about the lyrics to songs. Don’t get me wrong - I appreciate a well-written song, like I appreciate any piece of good writing, but only when I’m reading the lyrics. When I’m listening to a song, I honestly don’t know or care what people are singing about.
I’ll happily sing along to a song and I’ll probably know the words, but I don’t really know what I’m saying. Everyone’s had that moment of realisation where what they’ve always sung is not actually what was being sung. But I don’t really care.
When I’m listening to a song, the vocals kind of become another instrument that’s being played. It’s just down to how it sounds. What interests me is how the song is sung - the vocalist(s)’s pitch, the way they sing, how they hold notes, spit out syllables, whisper, scream…basically everything but what they’re actually saying.
I’m not apologising for this. If a song is well-written, I’ll appreciate it on paper but, while I’m listening to the song, I don’t really care. I just like (or don’t like) how it sounds.
I might be stating the obvious here, I might be sounding like a muppet, but that’s how it is.
Now, excuse me, while I kiss this guy.
