Refused - New Noise (Live)

Refused are one of those bands that I wish I could have seen live. I think they were awesome and this is my favourite song of theirs.

This video makes the crowd look static, but if you look at around around 4:24, you can see most of the crowd bouncing. Somehow, the cool kids must have forced their way to the front.

The official video is here. I love it as well, but I’ll always take a live video if I can get it.

So in an effort to break out of my music rut (listening to one Modest Mouse song on repeat is becoming unacceptable) I set my iPhone to shuffle all songs for the morning commute. And I love when a completely random song comes up that makes you smile to yourself. So when my man MJ came on with “Bad” I just started spontaneously chuckling to myself on the walk to my building. And then my subconscious kicked in and I started to strut down Park Avenue. Yes, you heard me right. Strut. I mean, how could I not? I was possessed by the Man in the Mirror.

It’s going to be a good day.

The best example I’ve had of this sensation was late Spring or early Autumn three or four years ago. We’d been out at the pub after work and then went round to a friend’s flat after that and played Nintendo and had a few more drinks.

It was about 10.30pm, unusually warm and windy. I was slightly buzzed, walking home along the seafront and, because it was warm, I felt good.

The tide was in and, with the wind, the sea was pretty rough. Every now and then a wave would hit the seawall and come crashing over the side, onto the seafront. Nothing ridiculous like you see in storms, but enough to make you damp if it hit you.

So there I am, walking along, on a warm night, slightly buzzed, in a good mood, waves crashing over the seawall all around me and, on random play, Refused’s ‘New Noise’ from The Shape Of Punk To Come started playing.

I turned the volume up as loud as it would go, with a huge smile on my face and marched straight ahead and for the five minutes of the song I felt like I was invincible, and it felt great.
